COURSE DESCRIPTION
The River Bend Middle School Band and Chorus are mainly performance based classes. Band and Chorus is open to any student at RBMS but the director has the authority to remove a student from the group or refuse entry because of behavior / attitude issues. Once a student is a part of Band or Chorus, he/ she is expected to complete the school year. The student must maintain a passing grade, uphold rules of the classroom, complete all assignments, and attend all performances.

GOALS
The goals of the RBMS Band and Chorus are as follows:
1. To provide a learning experience in instrumental and choral music.
2. To provide various opportunities in performing instrumental and vocal music.
3. To represent RBMS as an accomplished performing group.

CLASSROOM RULES
1. Treat others with respect
2. Be supportive and encouraging to your fellow peers
3. There is time for work and a time for play: Be sure you know which is which!!
4. I talk, you listen! You talk, I listen!
5. Be prompt
6. Take responsibility and have all appropriate materials
7. Take the initiative
8. Take pride
9. Be a team player
10. Do frequent attitude checks
11. No gum, food or drink (other than water) will be allowed in class

GRADING
Students must earn a passing grade in band and chorus. The grade will raise or lower according to the following standards:
1. Performance and Rehearsal Attendance
2. Musical Effort and Improvement
3. Behavior
4. Worksheets and Quizzes

The success and musical advancement of the RBMS Band and Chorus depends on the attendance and effort of each individual member. Any student’s behavior detracting from a productive rehearsal or quality performance will result in a lowering of the grade in addition to receiving a detention according to the RBMS Student Handbook.

An unexcused absence from a performance will result in a lowering of one letter grade. Requests from parents for an excused absence must be received by the director prior to the date of the performance. Excuses received after a performance will not be considered and will result in an unexcused absence. Excused absences provide only for family emergencies and student illness. All requests will be reviewed by the director and the principal.
