March 2009:
Dr. Seuss’s Birthday: Dr. Seuss’ birthday celebration was held in the LRC on March 2nd!  From The Foot Book, to Hop on Pop, to Oh, the Places You’ll Go, to taste testing some Green Eggs and Ham, Dr. Seuss reminded all of us to “Put Our Best Foot Forward”.  Did you hear some extra loud popping go on at 2:45 p.m. that day??????

THANK YOU!  Our Largest Book Fair Fundraiser!   The LRC hosted our largest ever yearly fundraiser - the Scholastic Book Fair!  This year’s fair was very exciting and raised over $3,700 to help fund special activities in the LRC at Fulton Elementary and River Bend Middle School.   Thank you for your support of this vital fundraiser for our LRC!!!!!!

February 2009:

Lincoln hat 03Abraham Lincoln Celebration:  Fulton Elementary School did a variety of activities to celebrate the 200th birthday of President Abraham Lincoln.

  • Birthday Cards: Several classes made and mailed Abraham Lincoln Birthday cards to the Lincoln Museum in Springfield.  These cards will be kept by the Museum in a special display.
  • Gettyburg Address: Grades 2-5 joined schools and groups across the nation at 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 12th to read the Gettysburg Address.  The national reading was sponsored by the Lincoln Museum in Springfield and students were able to watch a webcast directly from the Museum as the Gettyburg Address was lead.  We completed all the necessary paperwork to prove our participation in this event, and it is now on it’s way to the Lincoln Museum to be forwarded to the Guinness Book of World Records.  Thank you to those who served as our “independent judges” on that morning!
  • Collecting “Lincolns”: Students at Fulton Elementary were challenged to “Put Their Best Foot Forward” to collect  Lincoln pennies and five dollar bills to help fill the Lincoln Hat found in the LRC.  Students did extra chores, watched for “lost” pennies on parking lots and sidewalks, and generously filled not one but two Lincoln Hats!  On Feb. 12th (Lincoln’s birthday) the two hats were delivered to the Fulton Fire Department with the request that the money be used to help with the cost of the new Children’s Fire Safety House that the department purchased recently.

Reading Incentive:

Our annual reading incentive project “Books, Stones and Dinosaur Bones” was “dino-riffic”!  Students read over 130,000 minutes from Jan. 4 - 28th!  What makes that even more impressive is that those minutes were read OUTSIDE of their normal school day.  Thank you parents and grandparents for helping your children achieve our goal!  Also, special thanks to all the volunteers that helped us keep up with charting those reading minutes, and shelving and reshelving thousands of books!

Thaddeus Rex:

Students were rewarded with a special concert by Thaddeus Rex, a singer/songwriter from the Chicago area.  Thaddeus incorporates the importance of doing your best at school, reading all types of books, and caring for other people in the songs that he writes and performs.  Third grade students met with Thaddeus and wrote a song of their own.  You can hear their song, “Purple Elephants in the Sky”, on his website: http://www.thaddeusrex.com/news/blog.php
