Statistics

Prerequisite:  Algebra I

Text used:  Elementary Statistics, by Mario F. Triolo, Sixth Edition, Addison-Wesley

                   Publishing Company, Inc; 1995

Pacing:  This is a semester long course.

                  First quarter we will cover chapters 1, 2 and 3.

                  Second quarter we will cover chapters 4 and 5.

Grading:  Assignments are worth 10 points.

                  Tests are given every chapter and midchapter on longer chapters.

                  Tests are worth 100 points.

                  Quizzes will be given occasionally and will be worth 50 points or less.

                  A writing assignment will be given quarterly worth 20 points.

                  A semester exam will be cumulative and worth 20%.

 

Quarter One:

1.     Chapter One:  Introduction to Statistics

·      Basic statistics terms

·      Uses and abuses of statistics

2.     Chapter Two:  Descriptive Statistics

·      Frequency tables

·      Histograms, pie charts and pareto charts

·      Measures of central tendency: mean, median, mode and midrange

·      Measures of variation: Range, standard deviation and variance

·      Measures of position: Percentiles, quartiles and deciles

·      Stem-and-leaf plots and box plots

3.     Chapter Three:  Probability

·      Use PSAE materials along with book

·      Addition rule

·      Multiplication Rule

·      Counting Principle: Factorials, permutations, combinations

Quarter Two:

1.     Chapter Four:  Probability Distributions

·      Random Variables

·      Binomial Experiments

·      Mean, variance and standard deviation for binomial distribution

2.     Chapter Five:  Normal Probability Distributions

·      Standard Normal Distribution

·      Nonstandard Normal Distribution

·      Central Limit Theorem

·      Determine probabilities in a binomial experiment
