Accelerated Reader

“Accelerated Reader” is a reading program that:

Students earn points by reading “Accelerated Reader” books.  The point value is based on the difficulty, or grade level, of the book.   Students will set goals with me and will work hard to meet these goals.  Many of the students are excited about AR, but it is very important for you to encourage your child to read and not get behind on their points.  I suggest reading at least 15 minutes per night.  The students will be bringing AR books home every night.  They may read the books at home and take tests at school.

Students are given time in class to read and take AR tests as well.  Between time at school and reading time at home, there should not be any problems with reaching their AR goals. Students advance to different “Accelerated Reader” levels by meeting the following criteria:

Accelerated Reader Certification Levels

Independent Reader:  To become an Independent Reader a student must read 3 “Accelerated Reader” books and accumulate 10 points.

Super Reader:  To be a Super Reader a student must read 3 “Accelerated Reader” books that are worth one point or better and accumulate 15 points.

Advanced Reader:  To be an Advanced Reader a student must read 3 “Accelerated Reader” books that are worth 2 points or better and accumulate 20 points.

Star Reader:  To become a Star Reader a student must read 3 “Accelerated Reader” books that are worth 5 points or better and pass those tests with 5 points or more.

Classic Reader:  To be a Classic Reader a student must read 3 “Accelerated Reader” books that are worth 10 points or better at a 7th grade reading level.

On Thursday of each week an announcement is made over the intercom letting everyone know who has advanced to a new certification level and those students sign the wall of fame in the hallway by the office.

On Friday point clubs are announced.  This year the students have lanyards and collect “foot” objects to add when they have reached a new point club.
