United States History I & II
August 25th, 2009 by Mr. McCallister
Welcome to Mr. McCallister’s United States History class of 2010-2011. This year students will begin with the separation from the British Empire by the American colonists. Americans were able to govern themselves for over 100 years before the British decided they needed money from all their foreign wars. They began taxing the colonies without allowing representatives in the Parliament. As things escalated, a war broke out that created our country. The students this semester will study this time period and finish the semester with the Civil War. I believe they will find this a very interesting time.
Students are now studying the impact of the Revolutionary War and the challenges that existed in organizing a new nation. They now realize George Washington is known as the “Father of our Country” due to precedents he set as our first president as well as being a hero of the Revolution. Students will be examining the economic system set up by Alexander Hamilton and the controversies that led to our very first political parties, The Federalist Party and the Republican party or the (GOP) Grand Old Party headed by Thomas Jefferson. These times were critical for the survival of our new nation and showed how important each of the founding fathers was at the time.
