Lesson 1 Vocabulary words

alternative- something that is one of two types

appease- to make more peaceful and less angry

disperse- to break up and scatter

exempt- to release (someone) from something that applies to others

induce- to lead, to cause

lackluster- without brightness, liveliness or excellence

nocturnal - done or happening during the night

opportune- particularly convenient or suitable in time

pedestal - a stand on which something is or could be placed

receptive - ready or willing to receive; inclined to make a suggestion

spindly - long and thin in a way that suggests a lack of strength

status- one’s position in relation to others

stipulation- a demand or condition of an agreement

traumatic - seriously harmful, either emotionally or physically; having a lasting effect

unparralleled - having no equal

Affluence- Wealth

Contaminate- To make impure by adding something harmful or unwanted

Empathy- The ability to imagine what someone else is feeling

Fallible- Capable of being mistaken

Infer- To understand or figure out, based on evidence

Measly- Very small or inferior

Passive- Acted upon without taking action in return

Proximity- Nearness

Recoil- To draw back or shrink back in suprise, fear, or disgust

Reputable- Having a good reputation

Scrounge- To get or find by hunting around

Sodden- Filled with moisture

Stench- A disgusting smell

Tirade- A long and angry speech

Unprovoked- Without cause

Amass- To gather together a large amount

Apt- Exactly right for some purpose

Bleak- Without warmth or cheer

Concoct- To come up with (something) by using a variety of things

Craze- Somethign that is extremely popular at the moment

Impressionable- Easily impressed or influenced

Incompatible- Not able to go together or get along together

Obsession- Anything that one thinks or worries about constantly or much too much

Partition- To divide into parts

Presumptuous- Wrongly assuming that one is equal

Repulsive- Very unpleasent to the senses

Shortcoming- A falling short of what is expected or needed

Solicit- To try to get (something) by asking

Stagnant- Foul due to lack of motion

Unfounded- Not based on fact or reason

astute- clever and sharp- minded

Bias- a strong leaning for or against something that is based on personal preference or a se idea

Compile- To gather together andput in order

Destitute- Extremely poor

Enhance- To make greater or heighten

Extraneous- Not needed or not related to what id being considered or dealt with

Fabricate- To make or manufacture

Flaunt- To show off

Heyday- The time of greatest success or strength

Illegible- Impossible to read due to sloppy or faint writing or printing

Intuition- An understanding or knowledge of something without the use of reasoning

Lush- Growing thickly or heavily

Renown- Fame; good reputation

Sedate- calm, serious, and proper

Vigil- A period of watch, usually during a time when one would normally be asleep

What’s New?

Language Arts- The 8th Grade students are practicing their poetry skills on early out days.  We are on Lesson 5 in Vocabulary, with a cumulative test in 2 weeks over chapters 1-5.  Grammar and Writing activities are in full swing.

Literature-We are working on Unit 2 Short Stories.  Edgar A. Poe is coming up.
